How our area group functions

The Ramblers’ Association has a Central Office at 2nd Floor, Camelford House, 87-90 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7TW. England and Wales is then divided into Areas and the Hertfordshire & North Middlesex Area is one such Area.

Within each Area are Groups whose principal function is to organize a programme of walks and in this Area each Group issues its own programme, which is normally sent automatically to all members allocated to that Group. Allocation to Groups is undertaken at Central Office and is based on counties and postcodes and is normally the nearest Group to where the member lives, although there is the option to request allocation to a different Group. Members are welcome to walk with any Group and not just the Group to which they have been allocated.

The purpose of the Area is to provide a forum for discussion of important matters of mutual interest, often originating from Central Office, and four meetings are held annually at a central location on a Monday evening. Each Group appoints a representative who attends the meetings and reports back to his Group committee. Decisions are taken at these meetings but also we are taking forward items previously agreed by the Board of Trustees and in particular at General Council held over a weekend in the spring. This is arranged by Central Office and the Board of Trustees and many of the staff from Central Office are there with the Chairman of the Association chairing the meeting when important decisions are taken. The Area sends two delegates to General Council and, additionally, up to two visitors may attend and any member may attend as a visitor and does not need to be a member of any committee. The appointment of delegates and visitors is decided at the Area AGM in January which is an excellent opportunity also to meet fellow members and to listen to the invited speaker.

The Area also has a team of local footpath secretaries who are responsible for one or more parishes and work, with the appropriate Access Officer at Hertfordshire County Council (see their Rights of Way organisation chart), in an endeavour to keep the rights of way network in good order. Meetings are held four times a year to discuss matters of mutual interest. This is a very important part of the Area’s work.
